Scarrow's Lane, Carlisle

Scarrow's Lane was located somewhere in English Street, and is referenced in an advert from 1811, and also from a notice for undelivered mail in 1843.

Lanes within Carlisle often took their name from either inns, for example Kings Arms Lane, or names of businesses, eg Thurnam's Lane. Given that Thomas Scarrow owned an inn in English Street at the time, and that there was also a Wine and Spirit merchant owned by Thomas and John Scarrow, Scarrow's Lane was probably adjacent to one of these two premises.

Thomas Scarrow's inn was called the White Hart Hotel and was located at 18 English Street. See English Street Pubs. Thomas and John Scarrow's Wine and Spirit Merchant business was located at 62 English Street.

We recently found a notice in the Carlisle Journal of 24th June 1843 for "Unclaimed Letters" that were being held at the Post Office for "Ellenor Beby, Barrases Court, Scarrow's Lane, Carlisle". Barrases Court is also a bit of a mystery, but we think it refers to Barwise Court, which was also off English Street, and quite near to the Spirit Merchant ran by Thomas and John Scarrow.

As yet, the exact location of Scarrow's Lane remains unclear. If anyone has any more information regarding it, we would be pleased to hear from you.
